One of the most pleasant surprises we have had in the latest months has been the announcement of The Legendary Starfy for the Nintendo DS, a game that after many rumors has been able to be released to show its quality to the entire world. Perhaps the name could not be attractive to you, but I can assure you that this game is on the same level of the best platform games that have appeared recently.
Starfy is a whole phenomenon in Japan since its release on 2002 for the Game Boy Advance. The fame of the character made an official manga to see the light of the day on the second quarter of 2003. Its first appearance for the American market was in Super Smash Bros Brawl, where the star was shown as an assist trophy.
The story of the game is pretty curious. Starfy, the star of the game (literally) was resting comfortably on his bed when suddenly appears Buston, a strange bunny shaped character who is being pursued by an organization of pirates that wishes to get rid of him. However Starfy, after seeing this whole mess, decides to help Buston after witnessing how he is kidnapped. Yes, this means that a long adventure awaits you ahead.
Most of the levels are developed under the sea. It is on them where Starfy performs better due to its great speed underwater and also because the star counts with several kinds of attacks to knock the enemies out, being the most useful of all a little spin. As for the missions that are developed on the surface you will have the help of some characters that, just like Yoshi, will take you io their backs until you beat the stage. All of them have different ways to attack, from simple punches until throwing fire via their mouths.
The usage of the stylus is not as vital as in Kirby Canvas Curse. In this game you control Starfy with the arrows while all the action is shown on the upper screen; the touch screen works to see the maps of the zone you are exploring besides of some advices that occasionally appear. In special missions, both parts of the system will show the stage or the enemy to attack; in those moments you have to be very careful because any attack can come from any part of both screens. For example, in one of the first levels you will face a huge squid whose head is on the upper part but his tentacles will attack from the bottom part.
For those occasions where you are stuck or simply you have beaten the adventure several times, there is a local multiplayer mode where you can compete with up to three more persons in fun minigames. Now, if you what you want is to compete in special missions, you will be able to do it with a friend who will take the role of no other than Starfy’s sister called Starly.
